Today, as the technology is developing rapidly, the inventions and systems that make life easier are rapidly being integrated into our lives. One of the technological innovations that have become an indispensable part of our lives in recent years is touch screens. Touch systems, which have been used since the 1970s, have started to spread rapidly and increase their popularity particularly in recent years. Touch screens, which used to be found only on ATMs or similar devices, have now become a standard on almost all mobile phones or similar portable devices that have been put on the market. Today, touch screens are used in every field from devices used in the health sector to white goods. The developments in microprocessor and micro-controller systems allow the users to communicate more visually and interactively via the touch screen. SATOZ, one of the three largest manufacturers in the global touch screen market, manufactures touch screens for technology giants. We met with Mr. Sherong Yuan, the GM of SATOZ, to discuss the display market and the general situation of the sector. Mr. Yuan answered our questions about the future of touch screens, as well as SATOZ’s expectations for 2018.

Can you tell us about the history of SATOZ? What stages did SATOZ go through until it managed to become a global leader?

SATOZ was founded in 2003. I would like to briefly talk about the development stages of our company during this 15-year. SATOZ first started manufacturing CRT tubes for intercom systems in 2003. In 2008, we started to manufacture TFT displays. In the following years, we started to manufacture cameras, PCBAs and touch panels.

Can you tell us about your current position in the TFT display market and the importance of your company in the industry?

SATOZ has a good reputation and stability as one of the leading TFT display manufacturers. Our company is also one of the largest among China’s private businesses.

Can you give information about SATOZ’s annual production capacity, number of staff and production facilities?

SATOZ has 5 SMT production lines, 6 glass cutting lines, 10 FOG (flex on glass) lines, 20 polarizer bonding lines and 30 various joining lines. We have a production capacity of 2 million units per month, with our employees over 1,000.

In what dimensions do you produce TFTs, and are there any new dimensions that you plan to start producing?

Currently we produce 3.5”, 4.0”, 4.3”, 5.0”, 6.2”, 6.86”, 6.95”, 7.0”, 8.0”, 9.0” and 10.1” TFTs. The new dimensions that we plan to produce are 5.2”, 5.5”, 7.84”, 9.35”, 11.6”, 12.2”, 13.3”, 14.1”, 15.6”

Which sectors does SATOZ produce TFTs for? Which of these sectors has the higher share in your sales?

Our products are mainly used in tablets, security and intercom systems, vehicle navigation systems, consumer electronics and all kinds of industrial applications. The sector with the largest share, on the other hand, is intercom. SATOZ meets 50 percent of the needs of the global intercom sector.

Which countries you sell your products to?

In addition to Chinese local market, we sell our products to South America, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Türkiye, France, Italy and Spain.

What do you think about the future of the intercom sector?

Considering the unrivaled developments in technology and rapid changes in our lives, I believe that the intercom sector has a promising future. The intercom sector also plays an important role in SATOZ’s future plans.

What do you think about the future of TFT products? Will there be new technologies in our lives?

We can see many applications in which TFT LCD technology is used. As we can see already, the world is evolving from a basic display technology to intelligent recognition and artificial intelligence technologies based on human–machine interaction. The current conventional TFT technology is under the risk of being replaced by more advantageous OLED, AMOLED and even Quantum display and laser display technologies.

What do you think about Active matrix OLED (AMOLED) technology? Do you think AMOLED will be more popular than TN and IPS technologies?

Currently, AMOLED technology is on the rise and its areas of use will expand to many devices, from smart home applications to tablets and smart TVs. It will also be used in flexible display technology and giant screens.

What are your goals for 2018 and which sector are you primarily targeting?

In the domestic market, we will strive to expand our share in the car navigation and VDR fields. Our main goal, however, is to grow our export.

What is your growth target for 2018?

TFT technology is increasing its market share daily. 2018 will be a year of growth for SATOZ, one of the leading players in the sector. Under these difficult market conditions, SATOZ’s main goal is to stay strong and explore larger markets.

As an experienced businessman, how do you think the course of trade will be in 2018, and what kind of advices would you have for us?

As the capacities of developing countries increase, the competition between the manufacturers is getting more fierce. Learning, as well as raising new talents are particularly important. SATOZ is able to adapt to the changing conditions of our century. In the coming period the big companies will be even bigger than ever, and the only way to survive will be to constantly explore new things and move forward.

Rigid-Flex PCBs are complex circuits with a mixed structure that consist of solid and flexible layers combined in a single structure. Rigid-Flex circuits consist of two or more conductive layers containing flexible or solid insulation materials between each layer. Rigid-Flex PCBs should not be confused with regular Flex PCBs. Flex PCBs are simply flexible circuits. Rigid-Flex PCBs, on the other hand, are circuits with both rigid and flexible properties that allow designers to combine a large number of interconnected circuits into a single board. If you need to connect your PCBs electrically in various positions and directions, the Rigid-Flex structures will be the ideal solution. The sections that require extra support can be made rigid, while the corners and areas that require extra space can be made flexible.

Designing and manufacturing Rigid-Flex PCBs is more costly than conventional rigid PCBs, but they offer a number of significant advantages. The most important disadvantage of Rigid-Flex cards is that it is difficult to repair a damaged circuit, and the associated costs are high. Standard PCBs are usually more affordable than flexible circuits. We said “usually”, as the flexible PCBs have some fields of applications that can be cheaper than standard PCBs when the total cost of ownership is taken into account.

Standard PCBs may seem cost-effective at first, but when a flexible circuit is used we can eliminate components such as wiring harnesses and other circuits. When we remove these components from a design, the material cost, labor, assembly cost and scrap costs will also be eliminated, helping to reduce the overall cost of the design. For this, it is essential to calculate and compare the costs at early stages. Today, Rigid-Flex PCBs are widely used in medical applications, aerospace industry, automotive applications, as well as other challenging applications where flexibility is a must.

As the individuals living in big cities, don’t we all long for the nature and natural life? We often dream of seeing a giant tree welcoming us when we open our window, a majestic mountain view, vineyards stretching as far as possible, or at least a small garden. Begum Yurttas explored the delightful Swiss city of Montreux and wrote about her experience for those who feel the same and enjoy seeing different places. The meeting of green and blue is the one that comforts me, heals me, and takes me away from my personal issues, even for a few days. I look for this naturalness also at the points where I mostly prefer to travel. You can find examples of this in many different countries. But we don’t always have time to go miles away or take a trip that takes hours. Europe is the nearest option for us in this regard. Those dream countries that we can reach in a few hours. Of all these countries, Switzerland comes first for me. I particularly want to mention that this beautiful country also has an important place in our history due to the Straits Agreement: Montreux. Montreux is a point of tranquility that falls in the southwest of Switzerland and stretches along Lake Leman (also known as Lake Geneva). It is a small city located in the canton of Vaud, of a country divided into cantons. Located 90 km from Geneva airport, which you can arrive by a 3-hour flight from Istanbul (by Turkish Airlines, Pegasus or Swiss Air), Montreux is a very attractive option that can be reached in 1 hour and 20 minutes by train.

Of course, the busiest seasons of this city are summer or Christmas period. For me, on the other hand, the “ideal season” of a city is very related to what you are looking for. If you want to come during the Montreux Jazz Festival period to listen to big names around the world, you should prefer the beginning of July. If you are coming to the city during this period, you should also “accept” the high accommodation prices. Similarly, during the Christmas period, you can see a crowd that you will not see throughout Switzerland, witness chirpy street demonstrations, parades, and visit the joyful Christmas market. Except for these active periods, I prefer the seasons other than summer. The most important reason for this is to be able to see the snowy landscapes that have fallen on the tops of the Alpine mountains. It has an indisputable difference than it is without snow. October to April would be an ideal period for this. In particular, waking up to a lake and mountain view from the balcony of a small hotel room is an indescribable experience. Yes! You will be watching France in front of you. For this, the Fairmont Le Montreux Palace and the Grand Hotel Suisse Majestic are among the main hotels that you can prefer.

Don’t Return Home without Doing These;

So, what can you do on a weekend getaway in this city?

Get a room with a lake view.

Wake up, drink your coffee on the balcony of your hotel, and immerse yourself in the view of the Alpine mountains with the chill of the morning cold. You will not want to leave the hotel because of this peaceful environment that makes you forget all the urban chaos instantly. You might even want to have your lunch here afterwards. I can guarantee that you will enjoy it more than the most popular cafes or restaurants. By the way, don’t get immerse in this magic and forget to visit the city!

Take a walk on the shore.

After breakfast, you should definitely go for a walk by the lake. There may be a lot of places to see in the world, but there has never been another place where I have walked and found so much peace so far. I think there’s something magical about this place. If you want, you can buy a fresh snack from the hot oven of the Coop supermarket (also open on Sundays) by the Montreux train station and enjoy stretching your feet through the lakeside with freshly squeezed orange juice. It’s up to you to choose small pleasures. Since I am used to have breakfasts in the style of Sultan’ s table, like many other Turks, I can’t enjoy the breakfasts of Europeans so much. Going to a cafe and ordering croissant and coffee doesn’t look like a “real breakfast pleasure” to me. I mean, if I’m going to buy a croissant why not to take it fresh out of the oven and eat it against the most beautiful view? If you think like me, you are at the right place to do this. Because of the high food and beverage prices and of the magnificent view of the Alpine mountains, I believe that even sitting on a bank and eating something will also seem like a luxury. The entire coastline of the city can be visited on foot. You can even go as far as the Chateau de Chillon, the most visited and famous castle in the country dating back to the Middle Ages, and visit the interior of the castle, which is open during the middle of the day.

Taste the flavors of local and neighboring countries.

Switzerland is a country famous for its cheeses. In this country, you can find farms with the most beautiful and healthiest animals in the world. On a train trip through the country, you are likely to pass by a lot of farms and see many cows wandering around. Thanks to this, you can also taste world-famous cheeses in several different flavors here. Since Montreux is a small city, you won’t have so many options in terms of good restaurants. My favorite restaurant is La Rouvenaz, which offers Italian cuisine. For more affordable Italian menus, on the other hand, the Molino restaurant just on the coastline is also a good option. For local tastes, I believe you will find Le Museum delicious. Cheese fondue is the main dish of the country. However, since the fondue is made with Gruyeres cheese, which is fragrant and has a heavy taste, my advice would be to try Raclette. Offered with tiny fresh potatoes and melting Raclette cheese that resembles cheddar cheese in terms of taste, this flavor is my favorite dish in Switzerland.

Try the local wines.

If you want to buy local wines while touring Montreux, I can recommend a wine shop called ‘Mosca Vins’ right at the center of the city. I strongly recommend them, since their wines are not exported and you may not have the chance to taste them in another country. Moreover, they offer a lot of options. It’s up to you to enjoy your wine by the lake or at the balcony of your room.

Explore the nearby areas.

As I mentioned at the beginning, the Alpine Mountains you will see in Montreux are actually on French border. Therefore, it is very easy to change countries with ferry trips scheduled at certain hours every day. These ferries will remind you of those in the Bosphorus of Istanbul with their shapes. With these ferries you can reach Evian (Evian-les-Bains), which is the nearest region and whose name you will remember from the most famous water brand in Europe. In addition, you can access to other Swiss cities such as Lausanne and Geneva by the lake by ferry. However, if you just want to walk around the lake you can rent a small boat for a low price. If the weather is nice, you may even have a chance to swim in the lake, the water is very clear. Cities such as Vevey and Lausanne near Montreux are also worth visiting. Since Lausanne is a large city with many uphills, it may seem tiring. If you don’t have that much time, I recommend you to have a coffee and walk around the coastal Ouchy area in nice weather and particularly on weekends. For brisk nature walks and climbs, you can start walking up from any point in Montreux. As you go up, you will discover plenty of greenery and incredible points of view. By the way, if you are one of those who say I won’t return home without skiing, the town of Villars, which is about 30 minutes away and famous for its chocolate, will be a perfect choice with its affordable prices and ski tracks suitable for all levels, compared to other mountain villages. I would say do not delay your plans any longer for all these beauties. On a little weekend getaway to this magical country you will feel yourself like Heidi, the story hero of our childhood.
