Effective Use of Visuals For Websites

The human mind stores concrete images in its memory more easily than abstract images. 90% of the information transmitted to our brain consists of visual content, and the brain processes them 60 thousand times faster than the text and permanently . In fact, sometimes our brain can easily perceive the main idea that paragraphs of sentences and the numerical data want to tell, with a single image. Based on this scientific fact, it is an indisputable fact that the image choices on websites are the major element that makes that site “important” to users. When a visitor logs into a website, they are greeted by visual elements such as banners, campaign images, icons, brand logos, etc. If the user accepts the main idea defined by these elements and is convinced that it is functional, then they start to research the actual content they need, between texts and numerical contents. The most important rules to follow in the selection of images are that the selected image should be of high quality, original, interesting and related to the subject matter. Poor quality images lead to a prejudice in the user that the website is operated amateurishly, inauthentic images lead to copyright problems, and uninteresting images lead to a decision that the website will not work, all within the first 5 seconds that the user visits the website. Also, using an image that contradicts the content of the website may confuse the user and shorten the time they will spend on the website. If these rules regarding image selection are followed, the website would be considered as successful and functional by the user.

How should the Images be Provided?

There are 3 ways to provide images. The first is to produce original and project-specific content, by making image design from scratch together with a master graphic designer. The second is to buy images from ready-made image sites for a certain fee. And the last is to take advantage of the sites where ready-made stock images can be downloaded for free. From these sites, images can be downloaded by searching with project-specific keywords. When using stock photos, it is necessary to pay attention to the originality of these images in line with the prepared project, by means of image editing programs such as Photoshop. Non-original images can create an “amateurish” image in the users. In addition, creating images with aspect ratios appropriate to the section where they will be positioned and with the most optimal size that will not lose quality would have a positive impact on page loading speeds, making the website more user-friendly. Probably the optimal image format for websites is “jpg”. Therefore, it will usually be the best option to use images in “jpg” format, as long as there is no specific condition that prevents the use of this format.
