Today, the rapidly developing technology is causing change and development in PCBs. It is of great importance to use the right technology in PCBA production, create a solid supply chain and guarantee quality consistency. We met with Levent Okur, the Board Placement Department Manager at Ozdisan Elektronik, which differentiates with its investments in technology in this field. We asked him about the developing PCBA production processes and the sectors they provide services for.
First of all, can we get to know you a little?
I was born in Eskisehir in 1965. I completed my education and graduated as an Electrical and Electronics Engineer in that city. After I completed my military service, I worked in the field of UPS (uninterruptible power supplies) at Siemens for 2 years. After that, I continued to work in the production and test development departments at Netas for 10 years. During this period, I have had a lot of foreign training and been engaged in device integration studies. I worked as an expert test and production engineer at Solectron and Flex companies, which are two world giants in electronics production, after Netas outsourced its production to these companies. During this 8-year period, I had the opportunity to work abroad with global companies and gained important experiences. After these companies left Türkiye and incorporated in the production department of Anel, I started to work as the director of Production Engineering, R&D and Calibration (Accredited) departments at Anel.müdürlüğünü yaptım.
Özdisan Elektronik ile yollarınız nasıl ve ne zaman kesişti?
I met Ozdisan Elektronik in 2015, after Anel has withdrawn from the electronics sector. The common corporate value at the companies I worked for was that employees had trust in their companies, and the companies had trust in their employees. When I joined Ozdisan Elektronik, the first thing I noticed was the trust and respect that all employees felt towards the company and its owners. I feel lucky to have joined DMY Electronic Investments, which invests in new business areas, supports R&D and new technologies, and adds value to its customers.
Which departments are you responsible for at Ozdisan Elektronik?
I am the manager of the Electronic Board Placement department. I also provide support for the equipment needed by our electronic board placement companies, qualified personnel and subject matters as required by our enterprises. I support the business development processes with other companies, while also continuing to find new customers for our board placing companies.
“Ozdisan Elektronik is the leader in the sector with its technological investments in PCBA production.”
Can you tell us about the ongoing production processes within the company?
As for the processes of our department… Before the production processes start, board placement price offers are received from our board placing companies and notified to the related sales representative. The sales representative sends the order received from the customer to our board placement department along with all the necessary documents for production. With these documents, the production process begins. It is ensured that the sales order is handled and processed on the system. The delivery information requested by the customer is entered into this order. On the system, the materials required for the relevant production are created along with Ozdisan definitions, and the materials that are in stock are reserved for production. The missing products are notified to the sales representative and the related purchasing process is initiated. Based on the arrival date of the last material, our board placing companies are notified of the board placing and the process is started after the materials are completed. After the relevant production is completed and in accordance with the information received from our board placing companies, the sales representative and the shipment warehouse unit are informed that the inventory transactions have been completed. And the shipment is delivered to the customer.
Can you tell us about Ozdisan Elektronik’s position in the PCBA market?
Ozdisan Elektronik is a company that has proven itself with its leading position and a 40 percent share of the Turkish component supply market. In addition to this, it has also taken an ambitious position in giving life to electronics with the supplier roles it has given to our companies that carry out electronic board placement (ASSAN and EMS). It is a company that is followed by others in the sector with its technological investments in PCBA production.

What are the main features that differentiate the PCBAs produced by Ozdisan Elektronik?
The entire electronic board placement is a very complex process. SMT technology is the critical stage of PCBA production. Soldering stability directly determines the performance of electronic products. It is quite a difficult task to foresee, anticipate and plan for the possibilities that may arise during the design and production stages of a new product. This process is of great importance in companies providing electronics production services. What differentiates Ozdisan’s PCBs is that they are manufactured by our board placing companies consisting of trained expert personnel who know the production stages well and use the latest machinery.
What does Ozdisan promise to the sector in PCBA production?
Design services: Assume that you have designed your product and your engineers are perfect. However, you should remember that the production line where this “design” will be produced is of great importance and the process needs to be optimized. We know our own production equipment well and offer ways to make the customer’s products better before starting the production.
Testing services: You need extensive testing both before the production stage and during production. Testing the product saves you from many issues that will cause highly costs afterwards. For this reason, at Ozdisan, we attach importance to product tests.
Supply chain management: The only way to keep counterfeit materials out of the electronic production environment is to keep your supply chain management strong. Ozdisan provides a secure supply chain network to our board placing companies with material tracking and reliable sources.
Can you give information about your department’s annual production capacity, number of staff and production facilities?
We manufacture and ship a total of 3K-3.5K million pcs of PCBs with 1500 different PCB types to an average of 250 different customers per year. Our team, consisting of a manager, a supervisor, six operational personnel and six board placing warehouse personnel, carries out its operations with the support from our central warehouse. We continue our electronic board placement activities with 2 of our companies. ASSAN Electronics and EMS Electronics. Our board placing companies produce according to ISO9001, 14001, 18001 and IPC 610, J-STD-001 standards. We are able to make leaded and lead-free production on our lines. All of our SMT (surface mounting technology) lines include automatic screen printer, 3D SPI (Solder Paste Inspection, Measuring the density of Cream Solder), at least 2 pick & place machines with 75,000 CPH (number of components placed per hour), Nitrogen Re-Flow and 3D AOI (automatic optical control) devices. Following the SMT lines, we have ICT (in-circuit, test, in-circuit), functional and Boundary Scan test devices that check the accuracy of the product. We also have an XRAY device where faulty products are checked, as well as BGA Rework stations for the elimination of detected errors. When necessary, we can also perform re-balling (renewal of solder balls) on BGA (ball grid array) materials at our station. We use wave soldering or selective soldering device for THT (Through-Hole Technology) materials. We are able to carry out automatic coating on the surfaces of PCBs in accordance with the demands of our customers and apply aging tests in the desired heat profile.

Which sectors does Ozdisan produce PCBAs for, and which sector has the largest share among them?
Ozdisan Elektronik manufactures PCBs for industrial electronics, medical systems, vehicle tracking, energy and automotive sectors.
In which products are PCBAs used?
Today, with the introduction of electronic devices into our lives, we can virtually say that there is no product that does not include PCBs. The products we produce are used in industrial vehicles, elevators, kitchens, transportation vehicles, communication vehicles, health devices, lighting and many other similar smart devices.
How do you think the areas of use of PCBs will be shaped with the developing technology?
As the technology developed, high-tech PCBs (printed circuit boards) also began to be produced. Rigid and rigid-flex (flexible) PCBs have entered our daily lives. The sizes of PCBAs have now become very small. The developments in manufacturing technology are adding new capabilities to wearable systems, making the flexible printed electronic systems lighter, and making it easier for PCBs to be embedded in our clothes and on our bodies. Innovations such as smart contact lenses, smart pills, smart health devices, smart knee pads, back sensors, smart asthma systems, diabetes processing systems, ECG monitors and cancer sensors have entered our lives and we will see new ones in the coming years.
How do PCBA designs change with the development of technology?
PCBAs follow the PCB and component technology. The main goal is to produce smaller and lighter products with more functionality. More importantly, they are going to become PCBA designs that consume less energy, are smarter, and carries out several different tasks. Their use will increase in production facilities, medical facilities, research laboratories and other fields where information needs to be accessed quickly. The fact that devices are getting smaller every day will push PCBs to even more micro levels.

“The products we produce are used in industrial vehicles, elevators, kitchens, transportation vehicles, communication vehicles, health devices, lighting and many other similar smart devices. “

Are there any new developments in the PCBA world?
Today, the artificial intelligence operations and artificial intelligence operating systems make it mandatory to design systems that learn outside of conventional applications. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming one of the most important factors in changing the core of manufacturing technologies by 2025, and many of today’s working methods, productivity tools, and physical environments will become obsolete in the next eight years. In this sense, PCBA production will also require high technologies due to the complexity of the artificial intelligence algorithms (AI). The number of layers of PCBs, which are the cores of PCBAs, is increasing. High density PCB (HDI PCB), Flexible PCB (Flex PCB), rigid-flexible PCB (Rigid-Flex PCB) and PCBs containing embedded resistor and capacitor operating at high frequencies have started to be used.
What are your goals for 2018?
As the responsible department, we aim to be able to work with more companies in 2018 and achieve one hundred percent customer satisfaction, follow the innovations in the production sector, increase our production by at least 20 percent without compromising quality, reduce our production losses to a minimum and increase our productivity.
