Today, many industrialized countries consider the technocities they have as one of the most important tools for their economic development. Particularly the countries such as the UK, France, USA and China obtain a significant share of the added value they produce in the production and service sectors through R&D studies carried out within technocities. ODTU TECHNOCITY, which is one of our sources of pride with its successful works, is also one of the most important technology centers in T\u00fcrkiye. ODTU TECHNOCITY, which offers important programs supporting technology-based initiatives, also provides R&D support for initiatives that will create added value. We talked with ODTU TECHNOCITY General Manager Serdar Alemdar about their activities. Alemdar stated that they have won important awards in the national and international arena with the projects they have carried out and the products they have developed within the scope of university-industry cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can you please introduce yourself?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

I was born in Ankara in 1976. I completed ODTU Mechanical Engineering and ETH Zurich Electronic-Engineering departments. In my professional life, which started as an R&D engineer in Switzerland, I worked as a management consultant, and sales&marketing manager in the communications and information technologies sector for 14 years. I have interested in basketball first as an athlete, and then as a coach and columnist. I shared with my friends the idea of developing a platform that can analyze the real-time data collected from sports fields when I was coaching in the early 2000s. I managed to do this in the early 2010s with the advancement of technology, and I got into entrepreneurship in 2011. I have been working as the General Manager of METU TECHNOCITY since last February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Could you tell us about the activities of METU TECHNOCITY?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

METU TECHNOCITY, which has a competitive place in terms of its size among the technoparks established within a university, was established with the mission of designing, establishing and maintaining an innovation climate where entrepreneurs, innovators and companies flourish and develop together, and with the vision of creating a successful global \u201cinnovation ecosystem\u201d that shapes the future. ODTU TECHNOCITY carries out a wide variety of programs for the technology companies and entrepreneurs within the close region. For the purpose of supporting technology-based entrepreneurship, we carry out many activities and have many different units and programs, such as \u201cNew Ideas – New Jobs Acceleration Program\u201d, \u201cAnimation Technologies and Game Development Center (ATOM)\u201d, incubation centers, investment and acceleration company as a financial instrument (GROWTH CIRCUIT), \u201cTechnology Transfer Office (METU TTO)\u201d for the commercialization of academic knowledge, \u201cTechnocity Project Management and Consultancy Office\u201d to support international cooperation platforms, \u201cManagement and Consultancy Office\u201d, the defense industry (TSSK), ICT (T. ICT) and advanced health technologies (T.HEALTH) clusterings and foreign offices in many fields to develop inter-company collaborations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How many companies are there at METU TECHNOCITY? Which sectors are the companies mainly involved in?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

ODTU TECHNOCITY has achieved successes that will serve as an example to other technoparks in T\u00fcrkiye, such as the employment opportunities created by more than 380 technology companies, more than 60% of which are companies established at technopark, with more than 7,500 employees, 90% of which are university graduates, Ph.D. or master\u2019s degree graduates. 50% of the technology companies and entrepreneurs operating at METU TECHNOCITY are conducting R&D studies in software-informatics, 21% in electronics, 9% in telecommunications, 6% in medical technologies, and 14% in other fields such as advanced materials, agriculture, food, aerospace, energy, automotive and environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You have a vision of creating an innovation ecosystem. What kind of activities do you do differently from other technocities?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

ODT\u00dc TEKNOCITY, T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s first, most innovative and most mature technopark, has become a technology base where global companies such as Aselsan, Havelsan, TUSAS, Siemens, Turk Telekom, ULAK, Netas, Nurd (Comodo), ATOS, Arcelik, Vestel, Samsung etc. conduct R&D activities and where several technologies are developed, from original helicopters to domestic UAVs, national satellites to domestic fighter jets, or 5G technologies to smart TVs. Technology sales from ODTU TECHNOCITY, where ODTU\u2019s research capacity and knowledge are transformed into technological products in cooperation with general industry and the developed technologies are sold to global markets with high added value, have exceeded $1.4B, and the total technology sales have exceeded $13B TRY, making significant contributions to the country’s economy. Aiming to provide modern infrastructure and superstructure opportunities to companies, researchers and academics who develop and produce technologies that will increase the competitiveness of our country in the global arena, METU TECHNOCITY also contributes to the creation of synergy between the parties with its activities aimed at increasing the university\u2013industry cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n

Could you tell us about the R&D activities of METU TECHNOCITY?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Our companies have achieved awards not only in T\u00fcrkiye but also worldwide, such as the European Union Design Agency Design Awards, World Communication Awards, Tubitak Technology Awards, Deloitte Technology Fast 50, with the projects they have completed within the scope of university\u2013industry cooperation and the products they have developed. Many of the leading technology products and services of our country, such as the online education site with a large number of global users, the first domestic Playstation game, game technologies with sales figures exceeding 8 million and ranking among the top 100 games in the world, T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s first domestic social content platform, first fiber laser technology, the first and only local rehabilitation robot, the first local chip, the cochlear implant that can produce its own energy, the world\u2019s smallest atomic force microscope, domestic UAV, the national helicopter, the national fighter jet, the Gokturk-2 satellite, and the local 5G infrastructure, were developed at ODTU TECHNOCITY.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are the activities you are conducting for university-industry cooperation?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Within the scope of programs and projects carried out by ODTU TECHNOCITY companies, more than 1,500 joint R&D projects have been completed in cooperation with the university since 2002. More than 2,500 contracts have been signed with more than 700 academicians from more than 45 different departments, research centers and institutes. Also, the \u201cODTU\u2013TTO Technology Transfer Office\u201d established within our organization has a structure that aims to both develop university-industry collaboration and support technology-focused entrepreneurship. The \u201cIndustry Head Office\u201d that we have established within the scope of the studies on developing industrial collaborations and relations, assumes the role to form an interface in order to develop university-technocity industrial collaboration, while also providing collaboration in areas where the industry has R&D needs and mentoring on exemption issues. It also aims to identify and match the demands of researchers who want to carry out joint projects with the industry, as well as the industrial organizations which want to work with the universities or receive services from the universities in the most efficient way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe aim of ODTU TECHNOCITY is to offer modern infrastructure and superstructure opportunities to companies, researchers and academics who develop and produce technologies that will increase our country\u2019s competitive power in the global arena.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are you doing to create successful companies in the global arena?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n

The Growth Circuit San Francisco Acceleration Center, which was established in 2014 to operate as an incubation and acceleration center for technology entrepreneurs in T\u00fcrkiye and the USA, was deemed worthy of support within the scope of the KOSGEB International Incubation and Acceleration Program and was registered as our country’s gateway to the USA and global markets. Within the scope of the center, office support has been provided to more than 80 entrepreneurs, acceleration program support has been provided to more than 145 entrepreneurs, and cooperation has been made with more than 60 organizations. Teknokent Girisim Destek ve Yatirim A.S., which was established with this support, started its activities as an investment, acceleration and co-working company under Growth Circuit brand name. With its funding size of up to $2M obtained through new investors since the beginning of 2018, Growth Circuit has started to provide investment and acceleration support to technology start-ups at their early stages. 20 early stage technology companies took their first steps to offer their products to the global market by receiving $360,000 pre-seed investment from Growth Circuit and by opening to the US market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are there any entrepreneur stories that stand out with their successes at ODTU TECHNOCITY? If so, can you share them with us?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

While we support the establishment of technology companies through the programs carried out here, we also offer mentoring, consultancy etc. services for new technology companies and entrepreneurs at incubation centers. As a result of these efforts, the market cap of Udemy, one of the ODTU Technocity companies, has reached $1B, with a total investment of $150M that it has received in 6 years. Anvato, which develops specific technologies for video viewing and processing systems (video streaming), was acquired by Google. Also, the companies such as Onedio Otsimo, V-Count, Spirohome, SevenBridges, Biznet, StockMount, Pantheon and Evreka have also recorded significant growth over the past year and managed to receive investments from both national and global investors. Lastly, OpsGenie was sold to Atlassian for $295M. These are just some of the examples proving that ODTU Technocity not only exports software \u201ctechnologies\u201d, but also exports technology \u201ccompanies\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n

What are the main technological trends of today’s world? In what direction is the technology of the future moving?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Considering the technological trends today, we anticipate that many technology \u201cverticals\u201d will grow from digital banking to application distribution, from retail technology to cryptocurrency. The increase in the use of smartphones as \u201ce-wallets\u201d is also increasing the development of innovative digital banking solutions. Artificial intelligence-supported institutions and leading companies will use rapidly maturing technologies such as machine learning, natural language processing, robotic process automation (RPA) and cognitive technology systematically not only in core business processes, but also in designing the future of products, services and industries. Today, people interact with technology through interfaces such as computer vision, speech audio, auditory analytics, augmented reality and virtual reality, which combine human-centered design techniques and advanced technology. Finally, “Quantum Computing” is the new paradigm in computing. In the fields of physics, chemistry, electronics, computer engineering, production and programming, cryptology\/communication (satellite, etc.), defense industry and finance sector, applications with various verticals come into foreground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are your goals for the coming periods?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

In 2021, which we will enter as our 20th anniversary year with the 2017-2021 Strategic Plan prepared with the participation and contribution of our stakeholders, we aim to carry our national leadership to the global arena and create a sustainable innovation ecosystem that is talked about globally. While we continue our efforts in 2019 to make ODTU TECHNOCITY a successful global technology ecosystem, our activities will continue to produce successful technologies worldwide and bring billion-dollar technology companies out of this ecosystem with effective and strong university-industry collaboration. To increase the synergy between the companies and support global expansion while also focusing on clustering studies, the Teknokent Defense Industry Cluster (TSSK), Teknokent Information and Telecommunications Cluster (T.ICT) and Technokent Advanced Health Technologies Clustering (T.HEALTH) programs and activities will also continue. While the transformation of companies\u2019 R&D results into tangible technological products and the commercialization of developed technologies will be the most important topics in the coming period, and we will develop special support programs within this framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are the necessary reforms that our country should make to be competitive globally in terms of R&D and innovation?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

There are many factors affecting the development of the R&D ecosystem in our country. In this regard, it is important to restructure the government supports that have played a major role in the development of the R&D and technology competence of our country so far. While the current grant supports and public projects offer important opportunities for companies, they can also slow down the process of developing market reflexes. Solutions such as considering the commercial dimension as well as the R&D dimension in these supports and combining state support and purchasing policies may be useful in this process. Another important aspect for technology entrepreneurs is the development of the investment ecosystem in our country. There is also a need to support funding structures that will allow for investing in early-stage technology initiatives and to increase and encourage the interest of the private sector and investors in R&D. Basically, I believe that it is necessary to reconstruct our education system in a way that supports concepts such as R&D, innovation and entrepreneurship, and provides appropriate cultural change.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
