Twelve movies featuring world-famous stars like Juliette Binoche, Isabelle Huppert, Daniel Auteuil, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Ulrich M\u00fche, Naomi Watts. Numerous international awards including two Golden Palms, one in 2009 with \u201cThe White Band\u201d (Das Weisse Band), and the other in 2012 with \u201cLove\u201d (Amour). (This part has been quoted from the \u2018preface\u2019 section of the book \u201cHaneke Tells about Haneke\u201d by Michel Cieutat and Philippe Rouyer.) Michael Haneke is recognized as one of the best directors not only in the modern cinema world, but also in the history of cinema. He directed the movies \u201cThe Seventh Continent\u201d, \u201cBenny’s Video\u201d, \u201c71 Pieces of an Accidental Chronology\u201d, \u201cDeadly Games\u201d, \u201cUnknown Code\u201d, \u201cPianist\u201d (Piano Teacher), \u201cDay of the Wolf\u201d, \u201cHidden\u201d, \u201cDeadly Games U.S.\u201d \u201cWhite Band\u201c, \u201dLove\u201c and \u201dHappy End\u201d respectively. Haneke, who had his longest break from cinema so far after his last movie \u201cHappy End\u201d (Happy End), attended the Cannes Film Festival after 5 years but failed to receive any award with his last movie in the \u201cMain Competition\u201d section after 20 years. However, the first part of the biography by me about Michael Haneke, who is followed by his lovers with interest and curiosity in every way, mainly covers his unknown journey before cinema.<\/p>\n\n\n

Childhood<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Michael Haneke, who has once said \u201cA Biography does not enlighten us about the artist’s work”, was born in Munich on March 23, 1942, in the middle of a period when the Second World War was taking place. But in contrast, Haneke, who stated that he did not have a bad childhood, grew up with his aunt in a large country house in the rural part of a small city called Wiener Neustadt, about 50 kilometers south of Vienna. Michael Hanake, whose mother worked as an actress at the Burgtheater in Vienna, and who first met his father when he was five or six years old, had his first acquaintance with cinema at this age. But unlike many directors, Haneke has lived a terrifying experience with the 1948 movie \u201cHamlet\u201d, directed by Laurence Olivier, in which he also played the leading role. Haneke, who was screaming and crying of fear, had to leave the hall immediately with his grandmother in order not to disturb the audience. During his childhood and adolescence, Haneke developed interest in several art branches such as music and literature. He embraced music with Handel\u2019s \u201cMessiah\u201d, which he listened to at the age of ten, and literature with Alexandre Dumas\u2019s \u201cCamellia Woman\u201d, Alain Fournier\u2019s \u201cNameless Country\u201d and Dostoevsky\u2019s \u201cAliens\u201d novels. In fact, he passionately dreamed of becoming a pianist for a while, but later he gave up on it and preferred to do poetry and write poems. Besides, he even had the idea of becoming a priest for a while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His Youth<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n

During his transition to adolescence, Haneke turned into a teenager who began to hate all kinds of schools, painting a rebellious portrait. In so much that, he failed his class for a year and then completely dropped out of high school for a semester as he persistently refused to take his notebooks to the school. Haneke, who hated and rebelled against almost everything, felt an unbearable pressure on himself and decided to become an actor this time, after his dream of becoming a pianist or a priest, under the influence of his mother and father becoming actors. Thinking of \u201csetting himself free\u201d, Haneke left school one morning and hitchhiked to Vienna to take the theater exams he had heard that were being held at the Reinhardt Seminary, a performing arts school. However, Haneke failed to pass the exams, which meant the end of his acting career. After receiving his high school diploma, Haneke decided to study philosophy following the vacation, and at the end of his four years at the University of Vienna, he realized that he could not do high-level studies in philosophy and turned his face to different areas in life. Haneke, who also started to earn his living in his fourth year at school, realized that he was already a married man expecting a child, a factory worker and a man who worked in several jobs such as heating installation, teller, radio broadcaster and editorship in some magazines. Haneke continued his career by doing book reviews and novel adaptations on the Austrian Radio in half-hour periods. Through his father, Haneke interned for three months at the TV channel S\u00fcdwestfunk, and during this period he took the place of a retired dramatist, reading the scripts that came to the channel, selecting and separating out what he found successful, following the production of several TV movies until the last stage. At the end of his internship, he became the youngest dramatist in Germany, and also during these years he did a criticism program about theaters in the southwestern German region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Haneke, who has developed himself in player management, made his step into the television industry as a director with his first television film, \u201cAfter Liverpool\u201d when he turned 32 years old.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

Years in Theater<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to his girlfriend, Haneke had the opportunity to step into the theater industry as a director, a first in his career in any branch of art. Haneke, who managed to get his girlfriend to accept to help with the role after her complaints about the directives of her director, who was acting in the Baden-Baden theater in Austria, quickly set out to stage a play as an amateur, eager, enthusiastic teenager with the confidence in his girlfriend’s offer to the theater company, and entered to work for Marguerite Duras’s play \u201cAll Day in the Trees\u201d under difficult economic conditions. With the success of this play, which was exhibited at the end of their working period, he continued his theater directing career in the same ensemble for some time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Haneke, while writing the TV movie \u201dVariation\u201d, asked his actors, who he had also worked with in his previous movie, to give him ideas and contribute to the writing process by sending memoirs and documents to him.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Years in Television<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n

Haneke, who has developed himself in player management, made his step into the television industry as a director with his first television film, \u201cAfter Liverpool\u201d when he turned 32 years old. Before this movie, which he had been inspired by James Saunders\u2019 radio play with the same name, Haneke realized that TV was more popular than theater and decided to do something new in this field. Accordingly, he showed some of his theatrical works to the managers of some leading TV channels, and these managers gave him the opportunity to broadcast his works in a local channel.<\/p>\n\n\n

Haneke, who was called for a movie offer from Germany\u2019s ZDF channel after the success of the movie \u201cAfter Liverpool\u201d, first declined this offer, telling that the time for the shooting was short. However, about a year later, he was called again to shoot a TV movie for the channel. This time he accepted the project, as he saw this movie, which tells the story of a former high school teacher who wants to be placed in a retirement home by his children, as a desperate opportunity to find himself a place in ZDF channel (although he was not satisfied with the script at all).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Haneke, who considered this TV movie called \u201dGarbage Pile\u201d to be incredibly boring and erroneous, now feels lucky as it is impossible for people to find a copy of the movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1976, a year after the movie \u201cGarbage Pile\u201d, Haneke adapted the story \u201cThree Paths to the Lake\u201d from Ingeborg Bachmann\u2019s book \u201cAt the Same Time\u201d published in 1972. This time he has shot the movie in different locations outside Austria and Germany, in a small area of Paris, France, and signed a story articulated by going back and forth in time, where several stories corresponding to different moments of the life of a woman named Elisabeth Matrei were connected. In addition, the theme of \u201cmiscommunication\u201d, which is still considered the basis of cinema movies, was apparent in this TV movie, maybe for the first time. Three years after the movie \u201cThree Paths to the Lake\u201d, Haneke shot \u201cRodents\u201d, which he called as \u201chis first personal movie”, as two separate episodes. After many adaptation scripts that he worked on in theater and television, he also wrote his own original script with this TV movie for the first time. In this movie, for which he said \u201cI doubt there is so many autobiographical elements in my other movies,\u201d Haneke has woven \u201cthe portraits of people he knew about\u201d around five young people who represented an entire generation in the script. Michael Haneke, who took a three-year break from shooting movies for television after the movie \u201dRodents\u201c, told the story of a man who suddenly fell in love with two women in a new TV movie called \u201dVariation\u201c in 1982, adapted from Goethe\u2019s play \u201dStella\u201d, which he would also put on stage for the theater in the following years. For the first time in his life, Haneke asked his actors, who he had worked with in his previous film, to give him ideas and contribute to the writing of his new script, by sending memoirs and documents. In fact, while Michael Haneke stated that he used all of these suggestions, he has never made such a request from any of his players again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two years after the movie \u201dVariation\u201c, Haneke shot the movie \u201cWho was Edgar Allan?\u201d, an adaptation from Peter Rosei\u2019s novel for the ORF channel as a co-production with the German ZDF. In this movie, Haneke used the city of Venice, Italy, just like in the movie \u201cThree Roads to the Lake\u201d, and used a Steadicam camera for the first time. The theme of the illusion of reality, which appears prominently in his other movies, also can be seen in this movie as well. Two years after the movie \u201cWho was Edgar Allan?\u201d, he shot \u201cFraulein: A German Melodrama\u201d for SR Channel. For this movie, he came together with Bernd Schroeder to make an Anti-Fassbinder (German filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder) movie with him. However, despite the amazing story Schroeder told to Haneke, Haneke did not like both script versions that Schroeder created based on this story, as he found it \u201cFassbinder type\u201d. Afterwards, he offered to the channel\u2019s s dramatist to write his own script using the same story, and after receiving his approval, he wrote his own version and shot the film in a village in France. Following this TV movie, he decided not to work with someone else for script writing again. In the first part of the biography I wrote about Michael Haneke, I tried to convey to the readers his 46-year life, various events he went through and his directing experiences outside cinema industry until he stepped into cinema by directing the movie \u201cThe Seventh Continent\u201d. In the second part, on the other hand, I will write about the twelve movies and three TV films he has shot and the \u201cDon Giovanni Opera\u201d he has directed since 1989.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
