The software sector continues to grow daily. We are surrounded by vehicles, devices and even houses equipped with software. We met with Dogan Ufuk Gunes, President of the Software Industrialists Association (YASAD), who is known with his efforts in growing the software sector in T\u00fcrkiye and increasing the use of domestic software. Gune\u015f evaluated the general condition of the sector and shared very important tips for SMEs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First of all, can you please tell us about yourself?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

I graduated Istanbul University in 1985. I wrote my first code in 1982 and founded Korgun Software in 1992. When I founded this company, the concept of ERP did not yet exist in T\u00fcrkiye. There were simple systems like MRP, where the materials were planned according to the manufacture process. ERP, on the other hand, is a more comprehensive system that covers all business processes. In the 2000s, there was a great movement in the retail sector, and the factories started to open their own stores. When the barcode system in the US was first started to be used in our country we had already coded the domestic software of this system, and we were able to offer it to be used by the customers\u2019 upon request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the level of domestic software use, especially in companies?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

I can say that use of domestic software has been significantly increased. As for the two main reasons for this… The ability to \u201cact faster\u201d and \u201cfind a contact person easier\u201d when working with domestic software companies. Also, local production is more profitable in terms of price\/performance. We are able to provide software that offers better performance at a much more affordable price than foreign companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe future lies in disruptive technologies, and the main driving force of these technologies is software. Our SMEs need to equip themselves with software technologies and convert their businesses to digital as soon as possible.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What was the purpose of founding YASAD? Can you tell us about its activities?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n

\"Software\"<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

YASAD was founded in 1992, and I joined the association just a few years after its foundation. I have also been serving as the president of the association since 2011. YASAD continues its activities as the only association representing the domestic software sector in T\u00fcrkiye. We estimate that the number of companies operating in the software sector is over 3000. By now, the companies working in the field of informatics, software and computers could not be distinguished from each other. However, they started to be registered in a new system now. When the system becomes fully operational, we will be able to specify the number of companies more accurately. 467 companies are members of YASAD. These companies account for 72% of Turkish software market. 86% of software export is also made by these companies. In 2011, when I took office, we set \u201cgrowing the market\u201d as our first priority. The software market was rather small then. We have set two strategies for growing the market. The first was to increase export, and the second was to increase the ratio of use of domestic software in T\u00fcrkiye. In line with these strategies, we have increased our export from $250M to about $3B. We have also increased the ratio of use of domestic software in T\u00fcrkiye from 11% to 50%. Our current vision is to make T\u00fcrkiye a hub in the region in information and communication technologies. If we manage to do this, we will be able to increase our export to a minimum of $15B within the next 10 years. Thus, we will have the opportunity to employ at least 1 million young people in this sector. In short, the software sector will be one of the most important industries in T\u00fcrkiye soon. To me, T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s \u201coil\u201d will be software from now on. But of course, only if we continue to take the right steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How does the process work in export? To whom we export our software?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Currently, we export to 47 countries. Among them are the US, Germany, France, UK, UAE, Russia and Israel. We export software for about 43 fields, including but not limited to mobile technologies, financial technologies, digital banking, health software, MRP \u2013 ERP software, embedded software (machine to machine) and defense industry. Turkish software developers have developed systems where credit card purchases are made with a \u201cpassword\u201d, while still \u201csignature\u201d is used in US and many parts of the world. We export these encrypted systems to the whole world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How about the \u201cnumbers\u201d in Turkish software sector?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

The global software market is worth around $3 trillion. The Turkish software market is worth around $7B. When we look at the employment figures, on the other hand, we can suggest that 300 \u2013 320 thousand people work in the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are the prominent projects of YASAD?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Together with the Istanbul Development Agency, we have implemented the \u201cMy Ship\u201d project. Under this project, we first listened to our young people who had an idea but failed to realize it, and then selected the appropriate projects and offered mentorship to these young people to realize their ideas. We have also brought these products together with the local investors, while moving some of them to Silicone Valley. So, \u201cMy Ship\u201d has started to become a hub that creates an essential start-up ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is there enough qualified workforce in the sector? Are our universities sufficient in this regard?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n

Currently, in T\u00fcrkiye there are 1,670 vocational high schools and informatics departments in our sector, and the number of young people graduated from these schools is about 42,000. All these young people have received IT education, while we still need an average of 70,000 people each year. However, we can’t hire those kids. Because, all of them are still being educated with the technologies of 15 years ago, so they are not receiving the level of education that the sector is looking for. At this point, we have done very important works with the Ministry of National Education. With the support of ISKUR and KOSGEB, we have created a software strategy and put together a new education curriculum. This curriculum has started to be applied in pilot regions. ISKUR will also cover the employee insurance for companies that will hire young people graduated from these schools. Thus, we will ensure that not only young people can find jobs more easily, but also the companies can find the talents they need as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In which direction is the sector taking shape, and what awaits us in the coming period?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

The main \u201cfuel\u201d of what we call Industry 4.0 is software. Today, there is nothing we can do without software. 60% of the smart vehicles that will fill the agenda more in the near future also consist of software. Now the world is transforming in a way that the software will be the most valuable asset, and the software sector will be the most valuable sector. Investors who invest or think of investing in this field will start winning from today already. T\u00fcrkiye has to get rid of the middle \u201ctechnology\u201d trap, not the middle \u201cincome\u201d trap. Because, when we manage to get rid of mid-tech trap, we will also manage to get rid of the mid-income trap as well. The main for this is that we have a high chance of creating products with high added value in software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At what stage is T\u00fcrkiye now in terms of compliance with Industry 4.0?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n

What we call Industry 4.0 is a concept that the Germans created in order not to lag behind the Americans. As you may know, the Americans have initiated a digital transformation and made a rapid progress in digital field. The Germans, thinking about how to respond to this, developed the concept they called Industry 4.0. Therefore, Industry 4.0 is actually a concept originating from the European Union and Germany. We need to think on how our companies can survive in such a fierce global competition, without being stuck with Industry 4.0 or something else. First of all, our companies need to start digitalizing their business processes ASAP. A dramatic end awaits the companies that cannot digitalize. At YASAD, we are ready to guide all companies that are trying to digitalize, provided that our manufacturers are aware of the importance of the current situation and open to innovation.
