It is a flat panel display technology used today in TVs and computer monitors, as well as mobile phones. LCDs are completely different from the old CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) displays in that they use liquid crystals instead of cathode ray for their primary mode of operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An LCD screen consists of millions of pixels made of crystal and arranged in a rectangular grid. The LCD has backlight elements that provide light to each pixel. Each pixel has red, green and blue (RGB) sub-pixels that can be turned on and off. When all the sub-pixels are off it becomes black, and when all the sub-pixels are 100% on it becomes white.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>LCD Panel Structure<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An LCD is a combination of two substances, solid and liquid. The solid part is crystal, and with this liquid the crystal forms the visible image. The LCD consists of two layers: Two polarized panels: Filters and electrodes. The LCD screen works by \u201cblocking\u201d light instead of \u201cemitting\u201d it. This technology is used in smartphones equipped with an LCD screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Passive Matrix:<\/strong> This is an older technology. Some older devices have used this technology previously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>LCD Types are divided into 4:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Twisted Nematic (TN):<\/strong> It is cheap but offers fast response times. On the other hand, TN displays have low contrast ratios, narrow viewing angles and low color contrasts. Compared with TN LCDs, IPS displays provide superior image quality, bright color accuracy and distinctiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"360\" height=\"250\" src=\"https:\/\/componentbyozdisan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IPS-Ekran.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23372\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Vertical Alignment Panels (VA Panels):<\/strong> They offer a \u201cmedium level of quality\u201d between TN and IPS displays. Vertical alignment panels are considered as a good compromise between in-plane transition panels and twisted nematic technology. AFFS LCD offers the best performance with a wide range of color reproduction. These monitors produce high-quality images. When electric current is applied to a liquid crystal molecule, the molecule tends to bend. This causes a change in the angle of the upper polarized filter and the angle of light passing through the polarized glass molecule. As a result, there is a small amount of light that allows polarized glass to pass through a certain area of the LCD. Therefore, this area will look dark compared to other places. LCDs work on the principle of \u201cblocking\u201d light instead of \u201cemitting\u201d it. When LCDs are built, a mirror is placed on the back side. The electrode plane at the top of the device is made of indium-tin oxide. At the bottom of the device, on the other hand, is a polarized glass with polarized coating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The entire LCD should be coated using a common electrode, and the liquid crystal substance should be located on it. After that, there is another polarized film on top and a second piece of glass with electrodes, rectangular in shape, on the bottom. However, it is necessary to make sure that both parts are at the right angles. When there is no current, the light passes in front of the LCD, is reflected, and then re-reflected with the help of a mirror. In front of the light there is a screen consisting of red, green and blue pixels. To bring out a certain color or keep pixel dark, liquid crystals switch a filter on and off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Advantages of LCD:<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The main advantage of LCD is that it is low cost and energy efficient, and consumes very little power.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The LCD is thinner, lighter and very flexible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The LCD provides excellent contrast, brightness and resolution; therefore, the image quality is as clear as crystal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The radiation of LCD monitors is much less than that of CRT monitors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>LCDs are compatible with CMOS integration circuits, making their production much easier.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They provide excellent sharpness with local resolution.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They offer zero geometric distortion in the local resolution of the panel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They also provide various convenient features, such as portability, compared to screens based on previous technology.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Disadvantages of LCD:<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The LCD needs additional light sources to illuminate the pixels, so if the light source is distorted the LCD will not be able to reflect any images onto the screen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Image visibility depends on the light intensity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The aspect ratio and resolution of the LCD are constant.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The LCD has an irregular intensity scale and produces less than 256 individual intensity levels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Color saturation on an LCD decreases at a low intensity level due to a low black level.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The LCD provides a limited viewing angle, which affects the brightness. It is usually used for displaying text and simple graphics. These displays have a matrix or row-column layout arranged to show a certain number of characters or symbols on the screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This type of display is usually managed by a controller chip. This controller chip determines the location and image of each character on the screen. Users can display text messages or simple symbols on these screens, subject to some character set limitations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><strong>Operating Principle<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Character LCD operates based on the principle that liquid crystal layers are controlled by an electric field. It usually consists of liquid crystal layers located between two glass layers. Each pixel corresponds to a certain order and column, depending on the arrangement of liquid crystals in these layers. The electric field changes the molecular arrangement of liquid crystals and controls the angle of alignment of crystals, thereby regulating the passage of light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polarizing filters located in front and behind the pixels allow light to pass in a certain direction, and this is how the image is created. The controller chip indicates the text or commands entered by the user on the display, by determining the position of a certain character or symbol. While the Color TFT (Thin Film Transistor) and OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diodes) displays comply with all the definitions of graphic LCD displays and can be included in the category of graphic LCD displays, the monochrome graphic LCD displays were launched to the market much earlier than color TFT displays and therefore have become old-style displays. For this reason, Graphic LCD displays refer only to monochrome (not full-color) displays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><strong>What are Graphic LCD Displays?<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike the Character LCD Displays that can only display numbers or alphanumeric characters, the graphic LCD displays can display numbers, alphanumeric characters, and graphics. Graphic LCD displays played a major role in the early stages of LCD displays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Graphic LCD displays are defined by the number of pixels in the vertical and horizontal directions. For instance, a 128 x 64 dot matrix graphic display has 128 dots\/pixel along the X-axis (horizontal) and 64 dots\/pixel along the Y-axis (vertical). Each of these points, sometimes also called \u201cpixels\u201d, can be turned on and off independently of each other. They enable devices such as mobile phones, laptops and TVs to produce clear images. They are also used in devices such as watches, calculators and digital readers, to enable the users to read the texts easily. The automotive industry also uses this technology. In conventional LCD modules, the driver circuit is usually placed on a PCB (Printed Circuit Board), which increases the thickness of the display. In COG technology, however, the driver chip is integrated directly into one of the glass plates that make up the LCD screen. This makes the module thinner and increases reliability by isolating the connections from environmental factors.
